It may be the end of summer, but there's still time to get in some last-minute fun in the sun! And what better way to celebrate Labor Day than with a fun-filled weekend at one of Chicagoland's best camping sites. I've been to several over the years, but I have to say these are my top 5 favorites are:

๐ Illinois Beach State Park – Enjoy scenic stretches of sand, dunes, marshes, woods, and hiking trails before resting in the campsite in the southern section of Illinois Beach State Park, which is located on 6.5 miles of Lake Michigan coast. There's plenty of room for tents, RVs, vehicles, and trailers at the 241 sites, which all offer power, toilets, and showers.
๐ Starved Rock State Park – The majority of visitors come to Starved Rock to hike through the park's twisting sandstone canyons and take photographs in front of its seasonal waterfalls, but it is also possible to stay overnight. Each of Starved Rock's 129 campsites has space for two vehicles, a picnic table, a fire pit, and power. Two shower houses (with flush toilets, a camping luxury!) and a playground for the youngsters are also available.
๐ Indiana Dunes State Park – “A weekend at the Dunes” signifies a vacation to this popular Indiana State Park, which is just a half-hour drive from the Illinois border for most Chicagoans. Visitors generally spend their time resting on the beach or hiking the 1.5-mile route that leads to the park's three highest dunes. The modest 66-site Dunewood Campground immediately south of the park or the bigger (and extremely popular) Indiana Dunes State Park Campground, which is less than a mile from the beach, are also choices for campers.
๐ Rock Cut Stake Park – Rock Cut State Park is located just north of Rockford, Illinois, and features two lakes (the large Pierce Lake and the smaller Olson Lake) as well as plenty of hiking, fishing, and boating opportunities. More than 250 campsites with power, showers, and toilets are available at the park. A single cabin (with a capacity for six people) may also be leased, however, you'll need to book far ahead of time.
๐ Chain O' Lakes State Park– Chain O' Lakes State Park, nestled among Illinois' greatest concentration of natural lakes, provides picturesque hikes, popular fishing areas, and boat and canoe rentals. After a day on the lake, pitch a tent in one of the three Class B campsites (Turner Lake South, Prairie View, or Mud Lake East), which are roughly half the price per night.
Where's your go-to spot?
Note: Please wear a face mask and sanitize your hands before entering the place. Always stay safe and have a great day!
